Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba and Reggie. Written at 2pm on the same day as A/4/6. A film company have asked him to quote a certain 'star' of theirs as one of the few American beauties to go in his Book of Beauty, which would give him terrific publicity. He is also going to speak on Movietone for two and half minutes on Monday. He has had a terrific time with press reporters. In a note added later he reports that the private view was a success in so far as people loved his work. He hopes to sell more pictures. Fewer people came than he had hoped, though he was comparing it with London crowds, and it was a success for New York. Lists some of the people who attended the private view.

Autograph letter signed to Mummie and Daddy. Is finally getting in more money than is paying out. Is $2000 up on the show not including photos taken as a result. Vogue is sending him to Everglades Palm Beach next week and Anita Loos is arranging that his exhibition should be shown there too. Lists work that he is undertaking. Has been photographing Miss Ruth Gordon in 'Serena Blandish - the difficulties of getting married' for Vanity Fair. Lists the people he has had to lunch that week. He thinks he must return next year to benefit from this year's publicity as it takes time to be successful. He would love to get to Hollywood and Mrs Moats has asked him to stay with them at Mexico City. His secretary has been ill and a file of photographs for inclusion in the Book of Beauty have been thrown away by mistake. Has seen a lot of Marguerite Alvaney, the singer, but has seen little of Bee. Mrs Chase has been very kind. Mentions Ilka and the Bossoins.

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, and Nancy, from on board the R.M.S. Aquitania, on his second trip to America, autumn of 1929. His cabin is better than last year, and he recognises many of the crew. Comments that Molly is travelling in expensive luxury. He knows few people on board and is going to spend the journey resting and reading. Thanks his mother for the lovely cigarette case.

Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba and Reggie from the Ambassador Hotel, written over two days. Has been meeting useful people and will soon start some work. The cost of living is twice or three times that in London, so he wants to get a good deal out of Vogue. Will be taking photos in Conde Nast's apartment which means he will not need a studio. Has visited Bee and her husband Duncan, describes the circumstances of their life. Will dine with Syrie Maugham the next evening, and may decide to move to the Gladstone Hotel, where she is staying as it is pleasant and less expensive. Continues his letter on the 14th having received letters from England. Sends personal messages, then is interrupted by a reporter arriving.

Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba, and Reggie, from the Ambassador Hotel, New York. He couldn't get his exhibition ready by the 7th, so it starts today (11 January). He had a private view tea party the previous day which 200 people attended, and a private view for which 1000 invitations were sent today. He has sold two pictures and been commissioned to paint Gertrude Lawrence. He will not hold an exhibition in a venue other than a gallery again. Has been working very hard up to the last minute to get things ready for the exhibition. Is moving out of the hotel to 419 East 57 on the 15th.

Letter to parents

Autograph letter signed to Mummie and Daddy from the Everglades Club, Palm Beach. The climate is wonderful, but it is difficult to get anything done in the heat and he wants to get back to work. Will leave New York in mid-March. The season is ending and flu has been terrible in New York, though he has avoided it. Has taken a lot of photos for Vogue and his exhibition has been a success. The ballroom has been far better than Elsie de Wolfe's. After 5 days, with 3 more to run, he has sold 5 pictures. Anita Loos has taken him everywhere. The richness of the place is appalling.
