ALS from Antony Roper, 72 Doxey, Stafford

He mentions that he has booked himself into College (30/6-3/7) to fit with Teresa'a availability, although he expresses serious doubts about finishing the trio in time. Consequently, he suggests that they all meet later in the year. He notes that he must polish up on his sonata. (Two pages of notes by Crook that outline a timetable for Roper's visit are attached.)

He refers to a proposed visit to see Crook and go through Roper's sonata. He suggests that after Christmas would be a good time. He has completed his tuba quartet and awaits comments from those to whom he sent it. He is also hard at work on their trio and has finished the slow movement.

He is sorry to hear of Crook's nose-bleeding, and hopes he recovers without dread of relapse through clarinet playing. He mentions that it was the first movement of his cello concerto that he had to revise. He mentions that he has been asked to write pieces for the baritone and tenor sax- horns.

Notes firstly, a cassette that has an excellent performance by Martin Roscoe and secondly, the violist from the Endellion quartet of Rebecca Clarke's viola sonata. He mentions that he will attend the Johnian dinner on July 1st. Asks Crook if he feels like having another 'go' at his sonata. He mentions resuming work on the trio and trying to contact Teresa. (A postcard from Teresa is attached, which mentions how pleased she is that Tony Roper will be in town with 'the trio'.)

Thanks Crook for contributing to his enjoyable stay in Cambridge. He makes a technical reference to the appendix at the back of his clarinet concerto. He notes that he was unlucky with his violin sonata competition entry; he reached the last twenty but missed out on the prizes. He reproduces the copy of the reply to his comment to the RNCM regarding the late scheduling of the qualifying rounds of Young Musician of the Year by the BBC.
