Recommends a CD of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet by Janet Hilton, and goes on to sing the praises of his 'A major' quartet, noting that ' Mozart's genius is here at full stretch.'

He is sorry to hear of Crook's nose-bleeding, and hopes he recovers without dread of relapse through clarinet playing. He mentions that it was the first movement of his cello concerto that he had to revise. He mentions that he has been asked to write pieces for the baritone and tenor sax- horns.

Thanks Crook for contributing to his enjoyable stay in Cambridge. He makes a technical reference to the appendix at the back of his clarinet concerto. He notes that he was unlucky with his violin sonata competition entry; he reached the last twenty but missed out on the prizes. He reproduces the copy of the reply to his comment to the RNCM regarding the late scheduling of the qualifying rounds of Young Musician of the Year by the BBC.

Expresses his regret at Crook's medical condition. He will try to contact him when he visits at the beginning of July.
