Thanks Crook for sending them a book, which apparently tells of the school days of a character called Laura.

Notes his pleasure at Crook's appraisal of Goodman. Refers to a new Principal appointed to Catriona's school, reorganised to detrimental effect, demoting and docking salaries en route. This breached New Zealand labour law. Catriona (his wife) has been involved in the legal backlash that has resulted and is now exhausted as a consequence. They send good wishes for Crook's forthcoming birthday.

He confirms his arrival in Cambridge on Jan 2nd. Staying at the Royal Cambridge Hotel, he suggests to Crook that they meet on the evening of Jan 3rd.

He asks Crook if he will read the draft of his book on the 'Constitution of the Republic' that he is writing for the OUP. The bulk of the book is written, but he is considering including a chapter on the later impact of the constitution on Renaissance and early modern Europe.

Thanks Crook for his note and assures him that he will take his advice and write to Duncan. He mentions that he finds it hard to imagine a 'non-acute Crook'.
