Also known as the Residence Books they were originally kept by the Scholars' Butler and in the later 20th century by the Chief Clerk. After 1982, the volumes were produced as loose sheets. The books record undergraduate residence by students' names. They are arranged by years and terms within each year. The University requires that these are kept as evidence of residence. These reports are the sole record, the dissertations themselves having been returned to the applicants in most cases (there are some dissertations extant). They are invaluable for the revealing contemporary academic opinions on the subjects discussed. From 1978 onwards the reports were retained in the Master's files on each elected Fellow and those on unsuccessful applicants destroyed.
