Rentals and Terriers (1429-1800)

Includes: rentals of marked land for Westbury Manor,and Kirby Manor, lands pertaining to the Cambridge fee, quit rents and heriots in Ashwell; also includes a list of tenants. Names mentioned in the documents are Elizabeth Clerk, Stephen de Cambridge, John Kirby, Elizabeth Swetcoke and John Swetcoke.

Registers of Letters

Includes: registers of letters, copy letters and correspondence between Sir Thomas Denman and the Bishop of Sodor and Man [Henry Pepys]. Volume 1 includes letters (1538-1599) copied from the Thin Red Book, the Thick Black Book, the Thin Black Book and the White Vellum Book.

Register of Terms Kept

Also known as the Residence Books they were originally kept by the Scholars' Butler and in the later 20th century by the Chief Clerk. After 1982, the volumes were produced as loose sheets. The books record undergraduate residence by students' names. They are arranged by years and terms within each year. The University requires that these are kept as evidence of residence. (see note below)

Register of Succession of Fellowships & Scholarships

Fellows: 1860-1926; Scholars 1908-1926
Includes lists of those elected to the following fellowships from 1860-1925: Foundress, Beresford, Sir Marmaduke Constable's, Halytreholme, Lady Jane Rokeby's, Bayley, Gregson, Simpson, Dr Keyton's, Dr Fell's, Dr Thimbleby's, Dr Lupton's, Ashton, Hebblethwaite, Dr Dee's, and Platt. Also included are those selected for scholarships from 1908-1926.

Register of Fellows, Officers and Scholars

Registers of admissions of fellows, college officers including lectors, and scholars and other foundationers from 1545. These give details of county / diocese of origin and to which foundation elected. Volume 1 (1545-1612) includes lists of pensioners from 1553 and scattered College orders.

Register of Fellows' Admissions

Register of Fellows' admissions attested by notaries. Includes: William Sherwode [Sherwood]; Robert Babthorpe; Richard Hilyard; William Fultrope [Fulthorpe ?]; Robert Pember; Christopher Jac[k]son and Robert Nevell.

Register A: Fellows, Scholars and Exhibitioners

Includes: lists of fellows, scholars, exhibitioners and other award holders, officers, lecturers, governors of schools and prize winners (scholarships). Also includes lists of fellows, scholars, officers and others as finally enrolled in Register A; entries to this register ceased in 2013.

Referees' Reports

Includes: reports by referees on dissertations entered by applicants for St John's College fellowships. These reports are the sole record, the dissertations themselves having been returned to the applicants in most cases (there are some dissertations extant). They are invaluable for the revealing contemporary academic opinions on the subjects discussed. From 1978 onwards the reports were retained in the Master's files on each elected Fellow and those on unsuccessful applicants destroyed.

Pykeryng's Lands

Includes: deeds and related documents for Pyckeryng's lands at Atwick; also includes a lease for Little Markham Manor house in Nottinghamshire between the College and Robert Chapell; sale documents for Robert White and his wife Maude of Bishop's Lynn, Norfolk and material relating to Garton's holding in Atwick.

Also includes a case of the opinion of counsel which involves Francis Carleill [sic] and Matthew Oates. In the margin of the document there is a notation concerning William Babthorpe, John Pickering and Pickering's heirs.
