Biographical history

Philip Malcolm Shaw was born in Huddersfield in 1921. He was educated at Royds Hall and Manchester Grammar Schools, before coming up to Cambridge in 1939 as a member of St John’s College. He completed his B.A. in Natural Sciences in 1942, and would go on to pursue postgraduate study at University College London after the Second World War. However, immediately after his graduation he worked in the chemical industry at Grangemouth for the duration of the war. Shaw continued in his career as a chemical engineer, becoming managing director and then director of various companies, until his retirement. He then moved to the Lake District.

Note

Philip Malcolm Shaw was born in Huddersfield and educated at Royds Hall Grammar School and Manchester Grammar School, Shaw came up to College with an exhibition of around £50. He matriculated in 1939 and successfully completed his B.A. in Natural Sciences in 1942. After Cambridge, Shaw worked in the chemical industry at Grangemouth during the war and then did a Masters at University College London. His career as a chemical engineer progressed to becoming the managing director of William Blythe & Co Ltd and eventually the director of Hickson & Welch (Holdings) Ltd. When Shaw retired he lived in the Lake District but always enjoyed annual trips down south to play in the Johnian golf days. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 81.

Note

Peter Goddard, SJC Fellow, pointed out that the film contains (as I understand it from the
commentary) images of Ken Pascoe, who was a Fellow in Engineering and a Tutor for many years, dying in the 1990s, and also Richard Goody, the brother of Jack and now an Honorary Fellow. (10/1/2014)
