Biographical history

Atkin studied at St John's College, graduating BA in 1968. Between 1995 and 2005 he produced and directed 396 fifteen-minute episodes narrating the history of Britain and the British Empire for BBC Radio 4. The series, written by Christopher Lee, was titled 'This Sceptred Isle' and was narrated by many distinguished actors. In 2005 and 2007, Atkin collaborated with Frederic Raphael to produce a radio adaptation of 'The Glittering Prizes' and its sequel, the original radio drama series 'Fame and Fortune'.
