Biographical history

Graduated as seventh wrangler at Trinity College, Cambridge 1754, M.A. 1757. Fellow 1757; sent by Royal Society to observe transit of Venus at St Helena, 1761, was unsuccessful but made other useful observations; astronomer royal 1765; established the Nautical Almanac, 1766; made about 90,000 observations, published, 1776-1811; perfected method of transit-observation, 1772; invented prismatic micrometer; Copley medallist for Observations on the Attractions of Mountains (1775); member of French Institute, 1802; FRS, 1758.
