Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba and Reggie from the Ambassador Hotel, New York. Has been busy with Vogue work; a 'beauty' article has appeared, and 'impressions' will follow, with further articles commissioned. Has photographed Miss Nast in her father's apartment, is looking for people to do enlarging and printing of photographs, and is trying to find a gallery for an exhibition. Elizabeth Marbury has invited him for Thanksgiving.

Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba, and Reggie, from the Ambassador Hotel, New York. He is very busy with work for Vogue, and has taken photographs privately for $300 a sitting. Had a very successful lunch party. His exhibition is scheduled for a fortnight, starting on 7 January. Vogue want to send him to Palm Beach, expenses paid. He is going to see the Pacific Cotton Mills people who wanted him to design for them and hopes they will pay as much as he wants. He asks if Mrs Settle is still publishing his work in Vogue.

Letter to his mother

Autograph letter signed to Mummie, from 419 East 57. Undated, but must be after his move on 15 January and before his next letter of 30 January. Is settling in well to his apartment, which is cheaper and more convenient than the hotel. Lady Wolfe's departure for Europe has stopped the exhibition, just as people were starting to come in greater numbers. He has sold about $2000 of work and has orders galore. It was a mistake to hold the exhibition at a shop rather than an art gallery. He is starting to make more money. Vogue is sending him to Palm Beach to write and article and take photos, then he has spring fashion photos for Vogue. He will return to England in the middle of March. He may be illustrating a book for Anita Loos. The Cotton firm has not come up with any work, but an advertising company is now interested in him. Mrs H. Williams has commissioned him to paint a copy of a picture for $1000. Asks her to send her hat measurements and he will bring her one of little James's hats. Last night was the Beaux Arts Ball, with wonderful costumes. Hopes that Reggie will enjoy the air force. Goes to the Everglades Club Palm Beach on 5 February.

Letter to family

Typescript letter signed to Mummie, Daddy, Nancy, Baba, and Reggie. Has returned from Palm Beach. Comments again on the fabulous vulgarity there. Is sorting out photographic work and hopes to come home with a great deal of money. His theatre article has caused a stir. Many English people are leaving New York as the season is over. Comments on the Holdens arriving as the season ends.

Beaton, Sir Cecil Walter Hardy (1904-1980) Knight, photographer

T.S. Eliot. Typescript letter signed to Beaton

Thanks Beaton for the four 'admirable' photographs. Finds the poses a little more theatrical or studied than he is used to. Admires the skill with which Beaton has used the background. Has had many photographs taken in that room, but no one else has thought of using the glass partition.

Eliot, Thomas Stearns (1888-1965) poet and critic
