The MS verse begins 'Upbraid me not, capricious fair' and has been suggested to be by the seventeenth-century poet Alexander Brome; Henry Festing Jones set the words to music. The printed verse, 'Punch the Medium of Life', is by the eighteenth-century composer Thomas Arne.
