Family and personal papers

  • Price/Price 1/1
  • Series
  • 1930-2002 (The majority of the material dates from the 1940s to 1970.)
  • Part of Cedric Price Collection

Material primarily from Cedric Price's childhood and young adulthood, from school to early career. Includes ephemera, mementoes, some photographs and other papers, including those saved by Price's mother, Doreen.

See also other series in the collection for related material, particularly for bundles of correspondence.

Artwork

Artwork by Cedric Price, predominantly early work from childhood and university, with a small number of later items and designs for promotional material. Chiefly loose items, many of which were originally bundled into a large portfolio; plus a drawing book. [Note: CP's notebooks may be found at Price 1/8.]

Price showed himself to be an excellent draughtsman from an early age. The work is in a variety of styles: graphic designs, line drawings (including technical), diagrams, doodles and sketches, rough and fine work. Some are abstract subjects, most are concrete; many concern buildings (mostly domestic) observed or imagined, boats and marinas, landscapes and seascapes.

Media includes pencil, coloured pencil, draughting pen, watercolours, biro, prints. Also includes some photocopies (colour and black-and-white) of originals.

Photographs

Personal and professional photographs taken by Cedric Price and others.

Correspondence

Personal and professional correspondence-- the latter significantly hybrid personal-professional-- including letters saved by Cedric Price's mother, Doreen, and subsequently by Price. Some letters from other family members to Doreen are included. Letters have been kept in their original bundles, except where material has been extracted for research purposes after CP's death and their original arrangement is no longer known.

See also the series of Price's office files for additional correspondence.

Publications

Printed matter by or relating to Cedric Price: books, booklets, leaflets, offprints, and cuttings or whole copies of trade journals, newspapers and other serial publications, including reprographic copies. Includes exhibition-related material. See also chiefly Price 1/6/10 ('X15: Articles').

Diaries and notebooks.

Appointment diaries for 1963-69, 1995, and 1998-2003; many small notebooks used for both notes and sketches, used to varying degrees. A few are unnumbered or undated. The notebooks date from 1970 to 2003. Most are numbered in some way. Some have been additionally labelled or dated using detachable sticky notes. [Note: CP's student diaries may be found at Price 1/1/17.]

Memorial events.

Documentation relating to CP's funeral/memorial arrangements, including correspondence received following the memorial; together with details of the competition arranged in his memory.
