Plate Books: Steward

Includes: two copies of the SJC plate catalogue [plate book] by Sir Alfred Jones, the first is Jones' copy and the second belongs to the Junior Bursar as checked at the silver audit in August 1963 by the Master, the Senior Bursar and the Junior Bursar; a list of plate with accompanying papers previously held in the College Buttery and Master's Lodge but moved to the strong-room in 1939; a list of silver moved from the Master's Lodge when J.S. Boys Smith vacated the lodge and subsequently was returned to the Lodge in April 1970; a copy of the College plate list kept by the Junior Bursar comparing the audit of 1978 with the catalogue of 1934; a list of sporting trophies held in the strong-room in May 1994; the plate catalogue for 2003. Also includes loose notes concerning damage to silver, meetings of the Silver Committee, additional items to be added to the plate catalogue, the annual silver audit, gift of silver from Glyn and Ruth Daniel including a sketch of the the chalice. Additionally includes a list of entries in the College accounts concerning the plate; correspondence between Hugh Gatty and Alfred Jones concerning Jones' plate catalogue; rough notes listing amount spent on silver at different points in the College's history, a sketch for the copy of aremy in the monument to Richard Lowther. a letter concerning four Trencher Salt Cellars and their provenance as early American silver, and a list of silver deposited in the strong-room in August 1950.

Includes: Notebook entitled ‘Tutor’s instructions – 1883’ recording: terms of admissions and re-admissions (1858-1889); fees and charges including caution money, admission fees, matriculation fees, tuition fees, fees for Degrees, life composition fees, University Library charges, charges and fees for Lectures in Law and History (1858-1887); rules and regulations of tradesmen bills and students kitchen accounts (1878-1882); wages of bedmakers and laundresses and how often they were paid; room rate and how often Fellows and students paid for their rooms; furniture income; tutors’ proctor fund; residence rules (1839-1881) [also includes a page of printed examination rules and residence rules]; regulations for the long vacation (1855); agreement on the salary for a lecturer in law and history; student prize and how to obtain the prize (1856-1875); ‘Wright’s prizes’ (1875-1876); list of students who were awarded sizarships, exhibitions, and scholarships and the amount of money they received (1872-1841); procedures to follow when a student has fallen ill and failed to attend examination (1880) [also includes a copy of self-certified sickness form]; fees for proceeding to BA and LLB; fees for musical degrees; college testimonials (1859) and ) applications for degrees (1881).

Down Court Manor

Includes a 17th century copy of a sixteenth century terrier of Down Court Manor, near Staple, Kent. Also included are five 18th century terriers of the same property and three Court Baron rolls (1659-1703).
