The Marguerite

An annual publication providing a review of the projects and activities which benefactors have supported over the year. The 2019 issue looks at the advances made by women in St John's including the College's first all-female a capella group, Aquila; an Annual Fund produced opera and work that bursary recipients have been doing relating to women's welfare.

Terriers: Burythorpe

Comprising: terrier of land at Burythorpe, Kennythorpe and Leavening signed by Francis Wright (12/08/1723); terrier of lands and tenements in Kennythorpe leased to Roger Wright (11/08/1740); terrier of College property at Kennythorpe, Burythorpe and Leavening (27/03/1790). A note at the bottom of this terrier indicates that 407 trees were cut off the estate in 1790 after the terrier was made.

Includes typescript and manuscript subscribers' letters addressed to the Treasurer of the College Mission, concerning subscription payments. Also includes general notes; appeal letters; subscription and donation accounts for the financial periods 1935-1936, 1937-1938 and 1938-1939; and a typescript letter to subscribers from the Senior Bursar, dated 25th January 1955, concerning the continued payment and use of subscriptions following the closure of the College Mission in Hoxton in 1940.

  1. Two typescript letters from the Ecclesiastical Commission to J. T. Ward, concerning a grant of 850 pounds to match a benefaction (the Watson Fund) of one thousand pounds, with a view to providing an asst. curate at the Church of Lady Margaret at Walworth [dated 8th May 1907].

  2. Subscription lists (including subscribers' names) for 1906-7, 1907-8, 1913; undated lists of subscribers c.1913-1915; together with receipts, hospitality accounts, and a note of undergraduate subscriptions.

  3. Three typescript letters from Marlow Marten & Jesson, solicitors, to J. T. Ward, concerning a bequest of 250 pounds by Rev. William T. Newbold to the College Mission,and acknowledging Ward and the Master's receipt. Also includes Ward's draft reply in response to their advice [dated June 1908].

  4. Miscellaneous manuscript letters addressed to C.W. Previté-Orton from subscribers, 1914-1915.

  5. Miscellaneous manuscript letters addressed to F.P. White from subscribers, plus a letter from C.W. Previté-Orton, in which he offers his resignation as Senior Treasurer to the College Mission [dated 11th May 1921; all other letters dated April-July 1921]. Also
