Letterbooks: Senior Bursar

CATALOGUING OF THIS SECTION IS IN PROGRESS. Letter books containing copies of letters sent by the senior bursar: 1846 - (continuing). From 1909-14 filed ‘press’ copies (in the hand of the bursar and of his clerk) and, from 1914-16, filed typed copies, were kept alongside the handwritten books, certain of the letters being copied into the books by the bursar’s clerk. After 1916 the handwritten books ceased.

Bursars' Accounts (Rentals)

Including Fellows', scholars' and College officers' stipends; expenses of the Hall, kitchen, chapel, library and 'necessary expenses'; payments made to local tradesmen; rents from landholdings; payments made to Bursar for holding manorial courts and travelling to attend to the legal affairs of the College

Register of items removed from St John's College Treasury

Includes: two registers of documents and plate removed from and returned to the College's Treasury. The earlier volume (1561-1788) has front and end leaves from a medieval (possibly 14th century) commentary on psams and a medical text. Folio 62 of this volume has a list of plate in the custody of the Master on 4 July 1642 which includes the Foundress' Bowl, described as parcel gilt with a cover.

Volume containing lists of Henley crews of the Lady Margaret Boat Club, (apparently signed in their own hands), with photographs, 1951-72, 1984-1987, 1950 photo only; includes newspaper clipping about Cambridge crew winning US race.

Thames Cup 1949

A copy of a letter written 7th July 1949 from Hugh Stewart to his parents. The letter recounts the of the LMBCII versus Princeton 150lb crew in the Thames Cup, Henley 1949. Also includes an explanation of the rediscovery of the letter written in 2001.

Inventory and agreements

1 – The articles of agreement for the baking of college bread and related items between the Master, Fellows and Scholars of St John's College and Thomas Coulson dated 9th January 1811. The articles state the responsibilities of both the College and the Baker in the sourcing of ingredients and the production of bread.

2-3 – The covenant bond between Thomas Coulson and the Master, Fellows and Scholars of St John's College dated 9th January 1811. Also includes an inventory of the fixtures and furniture of the Bakehouse.

Minutes: War-time Emergency

The minutes from the committee meetings including arrangements for RAF Initial Training School (cadets), air raid precautions and shelters, building works, lodging houses and furniture, national service arrangements, National Registration and use of Chapel plate.
