History

William Arthur Stone was admitted to St John's College to read Classics in 1889. He was awarded his BA (first class) in 1892 and his MA in 1896. He was ordained deacon in the diocese of Bath and Wells in 1895 and priest in 1896. He worked as a schoolmaster, first at Bristol Grammar School, then Bromsgrove School, before becoming Warden of St Thomas's College, Colombo, Ceylon from 1901 to 1925. He lectured at University College Colombo 1926-31, for part of which time he also served as the incumbent of Holy Trinity, Colombo. In retirement he was vicar of Udimore, East Sussex until his death in 1936.
