Beaton, Sir Cecil Walter Hardy (1904-1980) Knight, photographer

Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Newton Ferrers

Has received Beaton's letter sent from 'Chinese muck heap'. Has just spent 12 hours travelling back from London to Cornwall. Discusses 'new terror weapon' (V1 rocket?). Lunched with K. Clark. Eddie S. West is going to marry Mrs Richards. Discusses telephone conversation with Laura about choice of man to take to dinner. Praises Osbert's book. Invites Beaton to stay. Beaton's photograph book has had wonderful reviews.

Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from North Audley Street, London

Thanks Beaton for weekend visit. Regrets not having walked more with Beaton in his garden. Praises Beaton's winter garden and compares it with his 'great stage creations'. Discusses the scent of flowers. Has always wished Beaton to come and stay in her Kew home, but having seen Beaton's home, never wishes him to come. Imagines how Beaton would react to it. Invites Beaton to stay anyway.

Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Park Avenue

Asks when Beaton is going to visit and when his book is coming out. Hubert has seen Beaton in Venice. Greta (Garbo) is back from Europe but has not made contact. Has had an argument with Greta about Beaton. Discusses Greta and the argument.

Autograph letter signed to Beaton, from Paris

Discusses Rita (Lydig) for Beaton's book. Can discuss her objectively despite being her sister. Rita was 'entrancing and remarkable'. Many men loved her but she was 'passionately religious'. Beaton met Rita shortly before her death when she was in a lot of pain. Rita is not a good person for Beaton's book as his readers would not understand her. Discusses how Beaton writes. Believes he should not concern himself with the 'gossip column' aspect of people's lives. Hopes to see Beaton soon in New York.

Sir Alastair Aird. Autograph letter to Beaton, from Clarence House, London.

The Queen Mother enjoyed Beaton's exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Beaton's photographs before the War brought back happy memories for Queen Elizabeth. The pictures of the Queen and the Prince of Wales are exceptional. The production by Richard Buckle is 'superb'. The evening was 'delightful' and gave the Queen Mother much pleasure.
