[Portrait of Robert Doncaster], by Samuel Butler

Pen sketch on paper (7.5 x 12 cm). Enclosed with an explanatory note by Henry Festing Jones: 'Butler's laundress was Mrs. Corrie. Mr Corrie (? Corry) not having been heard if for some years she became Mrs. Doncaster, but whether they went through any ceremony or not I do not know. This portrait of Robert Doncaster by Butler was made, I have no doubt, with the Camera Lucida.'

Pen drawing on paper, mounted (24 x 35.5 cm), after the photograph of Samuel Butler standing beside a sculpture of Stefano Scotto in the Ecce Homo Chapel at Varallo (printed in 'Ex Voto', 1888, p.189). [No. 60 in Henry Festing Jones's 1921 catalogue: 'Sadler made this for the Pall Mall Gazette from the photograph which is reproduced in "Ex Voto"; the drawing was reproduced in an article, and a cutting from the Pall Mall with the reproduction is with the papers given to St John's.']
