Prints

Loose prints originally stored in a variety of photographic wallets and envelopes. None is dated, though some dates can be established where the glass plate negative can be identified. Prints are of landscapes, vegetation, and parts of plants.

Soft negatives

Photographs taken during Yapp's participation in the Cambridge University Expedition to the north-eastern Malay states and Upper Perak in 1899-1900, led by William Walter Skeat. The expedition party consisted of W.W. Skeat (Christ's College, Cambridge), Nelson Annandale (Balliol College, Oxford), Richard Evans (Jesus College, Oxford), D.T. Gwynne-Vaughan (Christ's College, Cambridge), Frank F. Laidlaw (Trinity College, Cambridge), and Richard H. Yapp (St John's College, Cambridge). Laidlaw and Yapp joined the party later, in August 1899, and Yapp sailed for England in February 1900. The photographs in this collection date from October 1899 until the end of his trip, though most are undated. Some dates can be determined from published accounts of the expedition and from Yapp's correspondence. The descriptions given in all cases are what is written on the envelope.

Family correspondence

Letters between members of the Yapp family to RHY or Lajla or them both. The majority are from RHY's mother, but there are also letters from his brother Arthur, his sister Ada, or her husband Will. Four letters were written by RHY to his mother from Italy in 1911. There is also a letter from F.E. Weiss.

1909-10 travel

Two letters from RHY to his mother, from the train en route to London on 27 July 1910 and having just boarded the S.S. Vectis on 28 July 1910. An accompanying ticket wallet contains a flier for the S.S. Vectis cruise leaving Tilbury for the Norwegian Fjords on 28 July 1910, together with other tickets, and a ribbon for the British Association Edmonton meeting 11 September 1909 and excursion ticket for the British Association office-bearers and guests for an excursion at the Winnipeg meeting 1909.

South Africa trip

Letters written by RHY to his mother during a trip to South Africa in 1905. Also includes a letter written in August 1906 from a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in York at which RHY gave a lecture on South African vegetation, and a press cutting about the lecture.

Davos trip

Letters sent by and to RHY during a health trip to Switzerland and Italy. The majority (16) are from RHY to his mother, two more are to his sister. There are also letters to RHY from his mother, E.M. Freeman, and E.A. Newell Arber.
