Discusses Volume IV of the Cambridge Medieval History and a chapter concerning the dispersal of the Jews.

Is looking forward to writing the chapter on Spanish History for the Cambridge Medieval History. Has been using a collaborator who has specialized in Spanish Arabic history who has since left. Asks for information as to which chapter is required first and discusses practical concerns regarding publishing rights.

Discusses chapter on fourteenth and fifteenth century Spain he is due to write for CMH. Suggests that he needs more pages than originally intended as this is an important topic. Includes note by Tanner? suggesting a reassessment.

Suggests that including Portugal in the chapter on Spain for the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries will be historically possible but this treatment of Portugal for the fifteenth century onwards may prove insensitive. Suggests that Portugal's travellers in Africa were important in their own right as was the diplomatic maneuverings between Portugal and Spain. He knows many 'manifestations of these sentiments'

Agrees to Tanner's last suggestion and to the arrangement of the new chapters.

Elections in Madrid have taken up time and therefore will not be able to send his copy in at the time asked. Hopes to send it by June.

Refers to a proposal asking him to consider writing a chapter on Italy. Suggests that he undertook to write a chapter on the fifteenth century Popes but as he is retiring from course work he may have more time to write on Dante, Popes and the Medicis. Apologises for delay in writing. Has become almost blind and is having glasses made but will still prove difficult to continue with writing. Also has much work to sort out due to his forthcoming retirement. Suggests that Dante, especially the bibliography, will be the most work and difficult with his eyesight.
