Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Reply to J.C.A.'s of 29th. Comments on article in Mechanics Mag. Dec. 1846. Advises to wait for new observation of New Planet (Neptune) to measure its distance from sun, not to calculate. Thanks for further figures of position of planet. Does not favour Hansen's methods of calculation, nor LeVerrier's use of single observations. On the Lunar & planetary reductions calculated from Camb. Observatory

(See G.B.A. to J.C.A. 27 Mar.1851 for table of Saturn dated 1 Feb.1847).

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Motion of the moon. Quotes letter from Hansen on formulae he used. Requests further information on effects of one planet on motion of another.

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Requests J.C.A. or someone appointed by him studies '8 Venus mean longitude - 13 Earth's mean longitude' in the Moon's motion, to settle who is right between Hansen and Delaunay. Will send cheque for Horrocks Memorial later. (See G.B.A. to J.C.A. 28th Oct. 1874).

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Autograph copy of letter to G.B. Airy

Letter from Hansen to G.B.A. in Monthly Notices R.A.S. Nov. 8 1861. Hansen's memoir on the perturbations of the small planets: where he is wrong; where the translation is at fault.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Introducing W. Hillhouse who is visiting England. On new method of calculation for special perturbations. Published by G.P.B.; subsequently published as original by Encke; reviewed as original by Hansen. G.P.B. not happy. Advantages of new method.
