Reflects on his Gainsborough play, which he has been rewriting. Complains that he has already worked on it for nearly five years. Praises Waldemar's company. Mentions that his mother has been away for three weeks. Refers to his short trips to London.

Plans to holiday in the gulf of Naples, return to England for an October performance of 'Loves Labours Lost' for which he is the designer, and then travel to New York if he gets a design contract for 'The Chalk Garden'. Invites Garbo to visit him in September. Discusses his plans for home improvements. Worries about world politics. Asks after Garbo's new apartment. Tells an anecdote about revisiting the site of his first boarding school. Sends news of Diana, Lucian Freud, and Clarissa and Anthony Eden.

Discusses Lord Cholmondeley's vegetarianism and discourages Garbo from becoming a vegetarian. Details his activities during the week since he returned from America. Refers to the news that her husband may have to lose a second leg. Writes that his current pace is slow compared to that of New York, from which it has taken him three weeks to 'calm down'. Mentions that he has had a bad cold. Describes Spring at Reddish. Encourages Garbo to visit him on her way to the South. Instructs her to contact Mr Priest? who will make her travel arrangements. Likens Mr Priest to Mr George Schlee. Refers to a long drive and talk with Clarissa Eden. Describes the circumstances of the death of his friend, (Victor William) Peter Watson (1908-1956). Eulogises Peter Watson. Plans to travel to Chantilly on the following Thursday to visit Diana for a few days, then return to England.
