Tells of his depressed mood, caused by the illness of his brother. Suggests a date for a visit to JWW and notes that he could bring some drawings of church windows he has made on a recent trip to Europe. Also discusses the St Catherine Dock shares and the speculation that has surrounded them.

Has arrived in Dieppe after a fifty one hour crossing from Brighton. Describes celebrations in Dieppe for the anniversary of the landing of La Duchess d'Angouleme. Notes the the procedures he has to go through before he can proceed to Paris. Gives news of family he has recently visited. Describes his leaving of Cambridge and also his inability to recommend a candidate as a tutor for a family friend.

Requests a loan of fifty pounds due to the debts accrued by his recently deceased father. Gives a detailed description of the sorry state of his, and his family's, financial affairs, how his father came to lose such a large quantity of money, probably through poor investment, and how he intends to earn money by taking pupils to repay the debts. Asks to be recommended a curacy if there are any available.

Gives a description of his journey through France to Switzerland, crossing the mountains in heavy snow. Finds the 'natives' very friendly and has been invited to many parties. Is to proceed to Italy shortly. Asks JWW to ask Hornbuckle for £8.7 to be given to the new St John's College steward.
