Autograph letter signed to Beaton.

Borley will apparently sell anything at a profit and Beaton should approach him himself. He should get someone to look at the house with him, especially the roof. Will Beaton write to Borley and ask if there is any chance he will part with Ashcombe? He should say he is a very quiet, retiring gentleman. Perhaps Borley would like a house of ill fame.

Was in town for an hour today, and tried to see Beaton, as it would be easier to talk to him than write. It all comes down to whether Ashcombe is a pearl of great promise in his eyes. It is uniquely romantic and the rent is not bad for what it is. Wonders if it is the sort to make Beaton really happy. It is only worth it if he spends a good deal of time there. Would the kind of work he does be at all possible there? He should bring someone who knows him well down to look at it to see if he is made to be the "Squire of Ashcombe". She is not sure, especially as he seems to be wavering.

Enjoyed reading Beaton's papers. Has made some changes. Katherine Hepburn and Constance Bennett might want to sue him for libel! "Taking Photographs" is thrilling. "Winter House Party" as it stands is too small. What a heavenly letter Beaton wrote. Was very lucky to snatch him for a night at Ashcombe.

Must tell Beaton again how much she appreciates his "quite extraordinary considerateness and thoughtfulness" as a host. He was so busy yesterday but he never forgets any individual. One can't tell what a film will come out like. Enjoyed being in it all.

What a night of triumph! Each moment better than the last. Wants to talk about every minute of it. Has Beaton gone back to London or can they meet? It was the "hugest spree I have ever been at".

This is good and moving in its "vividness and restraint". Adored that day Beaton was here. Discusses the forthcoming athletic meeting. Has hardly drawn breath since Beaton left.

Was miserable at not speaking to Beaton before she left. Her spirits slumped at Anne's house and she didn't ring until Thursday. Dashed to Paris that night and had a "grisly" weekend with Bertha, who will probably be kept in the military hospital until the holidays are over. It is lovely and quiet at the moment but there is "an influx of Westmorlands" next week and then Ireland on the 28th. Asks Beaton to write to her then. The ball in Tangier must have been extraordinary. There is not much summer left here. They are going to the Rotary in Bristol tonight. Peter Hall has received a "pretty good pasting" in the press. Christopher is being sweeter than ever.

Hopes and prays Beaton is having better weather. Had a glimpse of the sun today, but with it a very low temperature. They did ski though. Discusses their trip. Mr Kelly "draws us endless pictures of prehistoric animals or aeroplanes". Hopes that Paris was fun. Has given up the struggle of keeping clean because although there is a bath, the water is not hot.

Has so much she wants to say to Beaton. Writes to turn down his marriage proposal. Was touched and flattered "beyond words" but believes that it wouldn't work. There is so much he doesn't know about her - "pathological untidyness [sic], birds nesting in the bed, sometimes weeks plunged in deep depression". Marriage should only be embarked upon by people who can't live without each other. Hopes Beaton will want their friendship to go on and to grow.

It must have been a terrible shock to Beaton to hear the sad news while in Paris. Death shocks "deeply and shatteringly" even when expected. He will probably forget how heavy a burden life had been to his mother. Once the funeral is over he will probably realise the "blessing of peace" for her. He has been a wonderful son. Is thinking of him a lot.
