Albums

'Snap-Shots taken by Samuel Butler Esq.' Five albums, containing a variety of black and white photographic prints, arranged chronologically (with the exception of Album 5, which spans the whole period covered by the other albums). The collection includes numerous scenes from Butler's travels in England and Europe, street and rural views, images of architecture and works of art, and informal portraits of Butler's friends and acquaintances. The prints in Albums 1-4 are labelled, with title and date, in the hand of Alfred Cathie (Butler's valet, friend and photographic assistant). Some of the prints in Album 5 have been retrospectively labelled by Henry Festing Jones.

Glass plate negatives

Near-complete collection of Samuel Butler's glass plate negatives, corresponding to the collection of photographic prints (mostly in albums) also held by the Library. The plates have been rehoused in conservation-grade boxes and envelopes, retaining their original arrangement; the original packaging, consisting of 'Ilford Dry Plate' cardboard boxes and paper envelopes labelled by Samuel Butler and Alfred Cathie, are also in the collection. The collection is fully catalogued on an internal database and the majority of the plates have recently undergone digitization. Please contact the Library for more information.
