Typescript letter to Beaton's secretary, from London.

Was "astonished and disturbed" to find the picture of Lady Salisbury on the front of 'Sketch'. Would like to protest as this contradicts their agreement with Beaton by which they should be given first choice of all his work. Would like to know the circumstances in which 'Sketch' got hold of the photographs.

Typescript letter to Beaton, from Wisconsin

Beaton's book has arrived and it is delightful reading. Alfred went into hospital for some x-rays and they found an aneurysm. He has been operated on by a man called Bergen and it was a success. Alfred began to get better quickly but then began to get worse again. Nobody knows what it was, but they put him back on intravenous feeding and he got better again, though he has gout. Has been staying at the Ambassador East Hotel. Alfred's brother-in-law, George Bugbee, went in to see him in the mornings and she went in the afternoons. He is getting well and walks around the courtyard every day. He had a check up in Chicago and they found him in fine shape.

The letter has been written hastily and "does not convey to you one thousandth part of the brilliant success that your work has been and how gloriously happy a little show the whole thing is".

Sends Beaton account. Is furious to hear that Beaton is writing a play much faster than she is. Is very sick and in a bad mood. Knows that it will get better eventually. Praises Beaton's "Libyan Diary" and the sincerity with which he writes.
