After much consideration accepts the offer of writing on Scandanavia between the 11th and 13th centuries. Would prefer to write in Norwegian. Includes note by JRT 'English'.

Writes to inform that the first chapter for CMH will be delayed. The Norwegian Government required HK's services for the negotiations needed to settle the Greenland conflict with Denmark and does not now have the time available to finish the piece. Asks if it should be 'machine copied' when it is finally finished and apologises for his poor English.

Sends MS for his first chapter of CMH. Is worried by the poor English. Feels that writing the history of the three Scandanavian Kingdoms in parallel may not be the correct way but to put 400 years of history into 30 pages was a difficult task.

Believes that as he has received no proofs of his first chapter there is no urgency on sending his second. Is planning to take a vacation in Italy for six months and would like to defer sending the second chapter until after that. Includes note from JRT confirming that more time would be allowed.

Refers to a proposal asking him to consider writing a chapter on Italy. Suggests that he undertook to write a chapter on the fifteenth century Popes but as he is retiring from course work he may have more time to write on Dante, Popes and the Medicis. Anything further will be difficult as it is not his period. Hopes to meet Tanner on the Tripos dinner. Includes note by Tanner? dated 24 June.

Apologises for delay in writing. Has become almost blind and is having glasses made but will still prove difficult to continue with writing. Also has much work to sort out due to his forthcoming retirement. Suggests that Dante, especially the bibliography, will be the most work and difficult with his eyesight. Suggests a colleagure, Mrs Ady, to continue this work. Includes note from Tanner? suggesting an extension in time.
