English-speaking peoples

Printed abstract dated 21 January 2011 and annotated draft paper dated 31 March 2011 for paper 'The English-speaking peoples before Churchill'. A photocopy of an article 'The forgotten Churchill' by George Watson from American scholar, inscribed 'For Peter from George 9.iii.11' is present. Also a flier for Britain and the world and an offprint from that journal for the published article, which appeared in volume 4.2, 2011.

Franklin College, Lugano

Programme for the 3rd MECPOC Symposium at Franklin College, Lugano, Switzerland, held on 20 April 2010, at which PFC was a guest speaker, together with two copies of PFC's talk 'Pragmatic and dogmatic Keynesianism: the relevance of Keynes's thinking today', one marked 'Lugano reading draft 20 April 2010' and the other 'Lugano text 4 May 2010'. This folder also includes the programme and attendees list for a British Academy conference 'Lessons from the 1930s great depression for the making of economic policy', and a copy of a paper delivered by Roger Middleton at that conference. A paper by Robert Cord, delivered at Robinson College on 11 May 2010, discussing PFC's talk to the MECPOC symposium, is also present.

Tanner memorial 'common sense'

Letter inviting PFC to contribute to a conference to be held at Bangor University in memory of Duncan Tanner, programme for the conference, and copy of PFC's paper for that conference 'The making and remaking of "common sense" about British economy policy'. The paper is word-processed, with manuscript annotations.

Duncan Tanner obituary

Various word-processed drafts of obituary, marked in pencil '1st PFC draft', 'memorial 24 Feb 2010', 'Bangor/Guardian' and 'TCBH 10 March 2010'. Also included is a text 'Duncan - Early academic life' which is marked 'John France' and appears to have been delivered at a memorial event, and which has a space in which to 'include Peter Clarke's tribute'. A photocopy of the published obituary in Twentieth century British history, the journal which Duncan Tanner had edited, is present.

Keynes LSE

Poster for and text of lecture 'The roller-coaster reputation of John Maynard Keynes' held at the LSE on 3 November 2009. Also text of a very similar talk given at the Treasure Executive Institute, Washington DC on 23 November 2009, and fliers and pencil notes for related book launch events for PFC's Keynes: the rise, fall, and return of the twentieth century's most influential economist.

Glenalmond Gladstone bicentenary

Material relating to a lecture delivered by PFC on 14 October 2009 'Gladstone the politician' in Perth, Scotland, organized by Glenalmond College to commemorate Gladstone's bicentenary. Includes Glenalmond's printed booklet accompanying the lecture series, PFC's reading text for his talk, and PFC's pencil notes on Gladstone dated 1987 and 1992.

Grinnell lend-lease lecture

Material relating to PFC's delivery of the distinguished guest lecture at the 31st annual meeting of the History of Economics Society at Grinnell College 23-26 June 2006. Includes email relating to the invitation, expenses, conference programme, and text of the lecture 'Lend lease revisited'.

Hayek paper King's

Contains a programme for a conference 'Frederick von Hayek and The road to serfdom: 1944-2004' held at King's College, Cambridge 21-22 June 2004 in which PFC participated; a flier for a Cambridge University Department of Political Science seminar 'Hayek revisited: the historical context of the road to serfdom' delivered by PFC on 24 October 2005; and material relating to the 'Keynes at 125' session at the 42nd CEA annual conference in Vancouver in June 2008, to which PFC contributed a paper 'Keynes, Schumpeter and Hayek: the making of the political economy of the twentieth century'. The text of the paper is included.

Thatcher's place in history

Material relating to PFC's lecture 'Margaret Thatcher's place in history: two views'. Contains copy of the reading script used at Grinnell College in 1997, together with a copy of text sent to Bradley Bateman at Grinnell in December 1997. Also correspondence from the Perse School for Girls in Cambridge regarding a lecture for sixth-formers on Margaret Thatcher, and a letter from the editor confirming that the essay would be published in the Journal of the history of economic though, together with a publication agreement dated 2002.
