Two pencil and watercolour drawings on paper, mounted together (40.5 x 56 cm). Drawings by 'natural artists', intended by Butler to illustrate 'Alps and Sanctuaries' but ultimately not reproduced in that work. Not dated.

Volume 2 of the autograph manuscript of 'Alps and Sanctuaries' by Samuel Butler, subsequently bound in three hardcover volumes. Inserted at the front is a small packet containing six printed illustrations. Additional printed illustrations are pasted into the volume between the MS pages.

Framed autograph manuscript (fair copy) of Samuel Butler's poem to Hans Rudolf Faesch, beginning 'Out, out, out, into the night'. A note by A.T. Bartholomew on the back of the frame reads: 'Nov. 18, 1931 put under glass / I regard this as the final version of the Faesch poem / This MS. is not in the Wilson option; nor is it intended for the B.M. It passes on my death to my exors G.L.K & B.H / ATB Jan. 1933'.

Notes 1874 to 1883 - Vol. I

Pressed (second) copy of the autograph manuscript and typescript pages of Samuel Butler's 'Notes', dating from Autumn 1874 to October 1883 and revised between March 1891 and February 1897. Bound in one hardcover volume (bearing the bookplate of A.T. Bartholomew). The typescript pages (pp.76-84, 92-114, 118-230) contain autograph corrections and annotations in Butler's hand. The volume is prefaced (dated 4 April 1891) and indexed (pp.231-53) by Butler. A typed, prefatory note by A.T. Bartholomew, dated 1 April 1930, is bound at the front of the volume.

Samuele Butler e la Valle Sesia: da sue lettere inedite a Giulio Arienta, Federico Tonetti e a Pietro Calderini / Alberto Durio (Varallo Sesia: Testa, 1940)

Two copies of Alberto Durio's edited volume. One is a first edition copy, given by the author on 2 May 1946; it includes a facsimile of a letter from Samuel Butler to Signor Arienta, tipped in at p.78, and a copy of a letter (in French) from the Librarian of St John's College to Alberto Durio, dated 24 May 1946, inserted at the back. The other is a copy of the 1986 reprint, brought back from an exhibition at Varallo and donated to the Library by Elinor Shaffer on 15 September 1986; it includes a printed programme for the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Sacro Monte, and a typed letter (in Italian) from the Biblioteca Civica at Varallo to the Librarian of St John's College, dated 11 June 1986, inserted at the back.
