Manuscript music notebooks of Samuel Butler

Four manuscript music notebooks, inscribed by Samuel Butler, with numerous loose sheets inserted. Contains pieces copied out by Samuel Butler, as well as some original compositions by him. Includes notes from Butler's lessons and conversations with W.S. Rockstro (one dated 7 November 1894), some in Rockstro's hand. Also includes 'Alfred's lesson book', being pages of music written or copied out for Alfred Cathie to learn. The fourth notebook is the earliest, inscribed 'S. Butler Decr. 20. 1854'.
