His wife's illness has put him behind by one year and feels he does not have the time to make a good job of it. Has just finished Arts and the Reformation and now has work to do on school history volumes. Will do something for the Bishop of Liverpool but has said that he cannot put a time to it.

Refers to a proposal asking him to consider writing a chapter on Italy. Suggests that he undertook to write a chapter on the fifteenth century Popes but as he is retiring from course work he may have more time to write on Dante, Popes and the Medicis. Anything further will be difficult as it is not his period. Hopes to meet Tanner on the Tripos dinner. Includes note by Tanner? dated 24 June.
