Has just had Beaton's sad letter. Knew he would feel like this, in spite of knowing it to be the best thing. His heart feels very differently. Promises that soon it will become less acute and less heartrending. Will think of him all today.

Thinks Beaton's trouble and courtesy is well worth it. Would like six of the little ones. Loathes the "folly and ugliness" of rash white mounts. Prefers green or grey.

Has only just got back from the South and is off again tomorrow. Will let Beaton know when he is free as soon as he knows himself.
