Print preview View:

Draft? autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

See 36/18/3 for French translation. Acknowledgement of CD's calculation of secular acceleration of moon's mean motion by Poisson's method. Thinking of sending four different methods of calculation of same for inclusion in Nautical Almanac. Pontecoulant unlikely to be persuaded of JCA's and CD's method. LeVerrier likely to come to unpleasant discovery of the truth.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Incomplete. See 16/17/1 for another draft of same letter. See 36/18/1 for French translation. Acknowledgement of copies of CD's replies to LeVerrier's attacks on his theory of the moon. Nature of LeVerrier, Hansen's and Plana's errors. M. de Pontecoulant's letter in Monthly Notices of RAS.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. De La Rue

Comments on De La Rue's speech on awarding Gold Medal of RAS to JCA. Whether a quotation from Herschel should be included. Whether LeVerrier should be mentioned in light of his and Delaunay's part in the controversy over the secular variation of the moon's mean motion. Accuracy of Hansen's and Plana's theories. Encloses copy of Delaunay's letter.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. De La Rue

[JCA's comments on De La Rue's speech on awarding Gold Medal of RAS] Acknowledges copy of Hansen's letter sent. Disagrees with H's assertion that he never contested JCA's theory of the secular acceleration of the moon: H caused LeVerrier to attack JCA and Delaunay, and is now adapting his own theory without admitting it might be wrong.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Encloses some letters from LeVerrier, brought back from Paris, which LeVerrier gave to be passed on to JCA. The attack on LeVerrier by Babinet appeared to be inspired by party feeling.

Thomson, William (1824-1907) Baron Kelvin, mathematician and physicist

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Sends Farley's tables of Lunar Parallax. JCA asked to write and thank him for them. Dealing with JCA's request of 24th. Comptes Rendus for 5 Apr. 1852 contains something by LeVerrier which JCA should see.

Stratford, William Samuel (? 1791-1853) naval officer and astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

The New planet [Neptune]. LeVerrier's work in process of being printed in full: thinks JCA should send the RAS his work to be printed and sent to France as soon as possible. Confidential.

Smyth, William Henry (1788-1865)

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Reminds JCA about abstract of Breen's paper. Has asked Herschel to write historically of LeVerrier and Neptune. Reasons for choosing Herschel. Outlines the sort of account he would like written, in answer to Peirce's objections.

Sheepshanks, Richard (1794-1855) astronomer
