Telegram to family

Telegram to family from Los Angeles. Expresses sadness that Murinine is ill. Leaving Wednesday. Address will be Everglades Club Palm Beach. May miss his father.

Letter to his father

Autograph letter signed to his father from the Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood. Was pleased to receive his father's letter from the Mauritania. Outlines his schedule for the coming days: he, Anita Loos and John Emerson are going to New Orleans on 9 January, then he will motor to Palm Beach, staying just long enough to write a Vogue article. He will not return home until after 3 February, when he is giving a lecture. Asks if his father will still be in New Orleans by the 9th. He has a new enormous camera and is photographing all the stars at the film studios. A call from Anita has just told him that they will be at the Hearsts' ranch for New Year. If he misses his father in New Orleans he will try to be back in New York before he leaves.

Newspaper clipping 'Finds U.S. girl...'

Clipping from unidentified newspaper discussing Beaton's photographs of American women for his book of beauty. (An article regarding the final game in the world chess championship between Bogolijubow and Alekhine is also present.)

Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to 'family' from the Ambassador Hotel, New York. Is busy with drawing, article, and photos for Vogue. Anita Loos arrives that night, so they will make definite plans about Hollywood, and may go to Mexico too for a few days whilst near. Is tired and not yet accustomed to the rush of New York. Encloses a funny article (A/4/18).

His address will be Hotel Roosevelt Hollywood after the 10th. Asks them to send negatives to Anita Loos there and to wire £200 for journey expenses to him here (ie New York). He is doing well and has sent some cheques home.

Letter to his mother

Autograph letter signed to his mother from the Blackstone, Chicago. Letter is undated. If his father comes out soon he will miss him, as he shall not be back in New York for another month. Writing en route to Hollywood by train with Anita Loos. Outlines his plans for the coming days. Had a last minute rush as he was let down by printers, though had a very remunerative week with photos and drawings. He took pictures of Elizabeth Arden and may be doing illustrations for an advertising booklet for Elizabeth Marbury. He is now more or less happy working with the new camera, having taken photos of the Astaires and Marian Davies and others. Is hoping for a rise from Conde Nast, and is receiving $400 each for his Hollywood articles. Is enjoying the train journey, was amused by the Irving Berlins. Regrets that Baba cannot go back to Boissiers and offers to pay for her to do so for the benefit of her education. He hasn't seen Bee. They arrive tomorrow evening and are being lent a car by Jo Schenk.

Is leaving for Hollywood today. Hopes that his father will arrive later as CB will be away a month. Suggests that if he postpones his visit he should bring Nancy with him.

Letter to family

Autograph letter signed to family from the Ambassador Hotel New York, on Cecil's first full day in New York. Undated, but before 12 November. Described their arrival and getting Molly Fink's extensive luggage through customs. Went out to a play and the Embassy Club with friends last night and today has been photographed by the press up a ladder. Lunched with Elizabeth Marbury, who has plans for work with Elizabeth Arden. Has bought a gramophone and records. New York is crowded with English people. The stock market crash has affected many people including Syrie Maugham, shows have closed and parties have been cancelled. There is still a good deal of money about and he expects to have plenty to do.

Newspaper clipping 'Far above beauty'

Cutting from unidentified newspaper, Monday November 11. Features a photograph of Beaton up a ladder and accompanying article explaining why the subject should be photographed lying on the floor.
