Beaton's telegram has arrived. Assures him that it would not have been worthwhile. It would have been nice to see Beaton but he hopes to be home around November. It is wonderful to feel hungry again and enjoy the smell of things. Had his first cup of coffee yesterday. The people in the clinic are "appallingly dull". Thanks Beaton for making such a tremendous effort on his behalf.

Is in bed with an "eye-splitting" attack of grippe. Is very furious with George. He is very tiresome indeed. Asks Beaton about London. The grippe is an "awful bore" as he cannot go out for several days.

Came here as it was raining in Kitzbuhel. Spent three hours in a bookshop yesterday. Then went to a bad ballet and a ball. The atmosphere was divine. Went to see the Palais today. There is nothing at the opera until Saturday. Tells Beaton about their friends. Asks Beaton when he sails.

Beaton cannot imagine how heavenly the Couregio exhibition in Parma is. Italy is a fantastic place. Spent the afternoon in the swimming pool. Went to Geneva for the first time. How right Voltaire and Stravinsky were to live there.

Never thanked Beaton for the loan of the records. Feels that Devon and Cornwall are the pleasantest parts of England. His cooking lessons have been most useful. Asks Beaton what he is up to. Is going to St Ives tomorrow to "join the artists colony". The country needs "more and MORE Art".

Thanks Beaton for taking such trouble on her visit. She enjoyed every minute. Discusses Salisbury Market. Thanks Beaton for his "goodness". It cheered her up a great deal to feel happy and amused.

Saw Beaton's interesting article today. Her wartime memories are her most poignant. Reminisces about the old days. Thanks Beaton for a lovely lunch.

Has such a boring tale of woe. Thinks of Beaton every day. Misses him deeply. Her whole summer has been clouded by not being able to look forward to her almost yearly visit to him. Wonders if he realises how intensely he is missed.
