Hans Rudolf Faesch

Sloping desk

Wooden table-top sloping desk, measuring 46 x 32 x 8 cms when folded flat. [This is the sloping desk Butler used to write on in Clifford's Inn; see note in Henry Festing Jones's catalogue, p.55.]

Chair

Wooden chair with cane seat, upholstered arms and casters on feet. A brass plaque mounted on the seat front reads 'Samuel Butler's Chair 1835-1902. Gift of Jonathan Cape Limited 1967.'

Brass bowl

12.5 cm-diameter brass bowl, brought back from India by Edward Festing Jones. [See note in Henry Festing Jones's catalogue of the Butler Collection, p.57.]

Holy water holder

Painted ceramic wall-hanging, measuring approx. 23.5 cm high, with a relief depicting the veiled head of the Madonna, and a protruding well designed to hold a small volume of water.

Tin paint box, measuring 11 x 6 x 2 cms, manufactured by James Tillyer of 321 Oxford Street, containing used watercolour paint blocks.

Fragment of a Greek vase

Fragment of a Greek vase, enclosed in the souvenir cigarette case [XI/8/8.1]. The fragement is painted on both sides. A label stuck on one side, written in Butler's hand, reads: 'bit of Gr: Vase found among debris under the site of the Temple of Venus on Mt. Eryx. S.B Given me by Bruno Flury'.
