Brass spectacle case bearing a relief image of Butler's hut at Mesopotamia. The case was given to Henry Festing Jones on 11 March 1925, by W. G. Bekker, who had it made from the brass of a chain originally belonging to Samuel Butler.

Fragment of a Greek vase, enclosed in the souvenir cigarette case [XI/8/8.1]. The fragement is painted on both sides. A label stuck on one side, written in Butler's hand, reads: 'bit of Gr: Vase found among debris under the site of the Temple of Venus on Mt. Eryx. S.B Given me by Bruno Flury'.

Two miniature pocket notebooks, each measuring 5 x 5.5 cms, containing printed calendars for 1896 and 1902. The 1896 notebook contains two lines of music and two pages of notes in Samuel Butler's hand, and many of its pages have been removed. The 1902 notebook is blank. [These are apparently the notebooks Butler used to record his 'Notes', from 1882 onwards; see note in Henry Festing Jones's catalogue, p.54.]

Three coins, a stamp and a fragment of wood

Three coins, a stamp and a fragment of wood, wrapped in paper, stored inside the tortoiseshell snuffbox [XI/8/13.1]. The coins were removed from Samuel Butler's pockets on the day of his death. The fragment of wood was cut by Henry Festing Jones from the pilgrim's cross at Varallo Sesia (which Butler mentions in 'Ex Voto'). [See notes in Henry Festing Jones's 1921 catalogue, p.58.]

Silver matchbox, given to Samuel Butler by Alfred Cathie, and engraved: 'S. BUTLER Dec. 4th. 1894. FROM ALFRED'. This was the replacement for a matchbox which Butler gave away to a Turk in 1895; Alfred Cathie and had the replacement engraved with the original date [see note in Henry Festing Jones's catalogue, p.58].
