A.L., s. to E. A. Benians, St John's College Master

Regrets he will not be able to attend 'St John's Day' as he has bronchitis. Has two interesting photographs, one of a Long Vacation cricket match between Dons and Undergraduates, and one of Sir Joseph Larmor coming out of St Paul's Cathedral virtually arm in arm with Arthur Balfour.

Gives news of College, including mention of Catton. Discusses his new employment as a tutor, also notes that he thinks he will study for the Bar and has no intention of becoming a clergyman. Notes that a number of Fellowships will be vacant at St John's. Gives a brief description of a journey he has recently made visiting the churches of Lincolnshire. Notes the marriage of Stepenson, and says that Lund, 'regardless of Stephenson's sad fate, still goes nightly to Green Street to take his cigar and grog with his future father in law.'

Has received his father's letter which as he expected, advised against changing Colleges. Lays out the case for changing Colleges in great detail, including discussions of money, Fellowships and the level of instruction at a smaller College. Also recounts his being 'confined to Walls' after a disagreement about attending mathematics lectures with Mr Evans, one of the assistant tutors.

Sends a College Bill and explains it. Has not any more pupils for the long vacation, and does not believe he will be getting anymore. States that it is a bad time for classical scholars, though an acquaintance of his, a tutor at King's, has told him that he would have been able to send him four pupils if he had received his BA sooner. Discusses his father's advice with regard to the Public Orator and has decided to 'be silent and retain [his] own opinion.' Notes his contact with 'young Finch' and suggests his father invites him to visit. Has had a dinner party and tells of his guests, noting that he did not invite Neville [son of the Master of Magdalene] due the coolness of his father's reception at Magdalene previously. Also notes that it is the subject of ridicule that the Master of Magdalene 'designs to smuggle his son through the BA examination'. Tells of the 'plucking' of a Nobleman, Lord Haddo, and is generally disparaging towards the class, saying they 'promote ildleness, expense and dissipation' and are 'invariably attended by … toadies, sycophants and tuft-hunters.' Gives news of acquaintances, and notes that he now has 'an excellent cellar'
