Autograph letter signed to W.H. Smyth

Not written to JCA: probably to Smyth who is named as author of the Speculum. Acknowledgement of gift of copy of WHS and JL's Speculum Hartwellianum (A cycle of celestial objects... 1860).

Articles by brothers Pontecoulant in Encyclopedie du xixme siecle discredit JCA's part in the discovery of Neptune. As disgraceful as their tone in the controversy with JCA over Moon's acceleration. Encloses something for Dr. Lee.

Wackerbarth, Francis Diederich (1813-1884)

Copy of autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

Another copy of 16/19/2. Authorisation for CD to publish JCA's expression of coefficient of principal term of the latitude [of the moon?]. Adds equation for principal inequality of the true latitude, and comparisons with Plana and Pontecoulant's results.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of autograph letter signed to Charles Delaunay

See 16/20/3 for another copy. Appreciation of CD's explanation of discrepancy between value of secular acceleration of moon's mean motion, and that derived from ancient eclipses. Likely to be attacked by Pontecoulant.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to J.W. Lubbock

Comments on Pontecoulant's comments on JCA's work on the secular acceleration of the moon's mean motion. To be transmitted to Pontecoulant if JWL thinks proper.
