Autograph letter signed to Beaton.

Has just finished re-reading "The Parting Years". Enjoyed it even more than he did the first time. He was wrong about Juliet Duff, though. Reminisces about the war years. Did not know that Beaton nearly died in a plane accident the day before he drove him to Government House. The house he and Binkie had together was burned down in April. Thanks Beaton again for the pleasure his book gave him. Hopes Beaton can read this as he has very terrible arthritis in his hand.

Her note 'spread notes of joy among the churning of worst things.' Has had very worrying, wearying life, but still it engages him in high-flown fancies which make life worthwhile. Went by car to London; meal with the Queen Mother. Praises her (and the meal); came away covered in glory.

Otherwise life has been rather sad. 'The news from the top sounds awful-- but what is to be done? Nothing, it seems.' Saw lovely play on Mozart which is packing full houses; mightily pleased by Paul Scofield.

Includes Gladys in his greeting.

Had dinner last night with Truman Capote. He met him in the street and agreed to dine with him out of curiosity. "Was I to be the bridge, with the outer world, in his rehabilitation program?". Describes how they sat "exchanging somewhat aimless chatter sipping ginger ale". Capote produced more of a commotion in the restaurant than would Marilyn Monroe. Feels he has become "quite an ordinary and boring man". Sends his love to Beaton and Eileen.

Beaton's letter was a joy. Encloses a story that appeared in New York Magazine about Charles. It is sad and nasty. Feels this is a new style of journalism. Has just finished his own piece on Charles which is more of a memoir. Spent the weekend at Kalima. Bill Paley is "a bit gaga". Babe seemed "completely missing". Hopes to spend Christmas in Marrakesh. Would Beaton like to meet him there?
