Discusses details of his planned visit to England in August. Was glad to hear about the beautiful parts of Egypt and sorry to hear about the ugly ones. Was appalled at what he read in the Koran in his religion course and it did not kindle a desire to go to Muslim countries. Would like to spend some time with Beaton in August if he is not too busy. Had some hilarious weeks working on "The Loved One" with Terry Southern. Had some fascinating weeks working on a screenplay of Carson McCullers' "Reflections in a Golden Eye". Tony Richardson seems delighted with it. Thinks "The Loved One" is going to be something quite unique. Richardson wants him to work on another screenplay of a novel by Marguerite Duras called "Le Marin de Gibraltar". If he does it, he will stay in California and hopefully see Beaton in October. If not, he will go to New York with Don. Don's new work is very interesting and often wild and mad. Isherwood appears very briefly as one of the mourners at John Gielgud's funeral in "The Loved One".

Wanted to tell Beaton how much he liked the pantomime. Was sorry he could not come round to Juliet's afterwards to tell Beaton in person. Beaton and Oggie were superb. Has never seen Oggie look so ravishing. If he had not been ill, he would have joined the party, bringing with him Dylan Thomas, 'the almost new but quite unintelligible poet'.

Discusses jewellery taken over by Mrs Musker and what has been left. Thought best not to claim on the insurance for a lost cigarette lighter. Went to see the dress rehearsal of Beaton's ballet and thought it was heavenly. There were lots of people at the rehearsal and they were all very enthusiastic about Beaton's clothes. Also saw "Follow the Sun" and thought it was a poor show on the whole. Heard from Mrs Beaton that Beaton is arriving back in April. Hopes Beaton will not be furious, but she has told Martin that he had better stick in his present job and not go back to Beaton. Has heard appalling stories about his drunkeness from William. Asks if Beaton wants her to engage another chauffeur for him. Hopes she has done the right thing. Mrs Laycock has paid off her bill.

Thanks Beaton for the flowers. Apologises for not thanking him sooner but the past sad days have postponed her intentions. Believes the new young Queen will bring happiness to people. Imagines that she longs to be home at such moments.

Tells Beaton that he thinks the financial year runs from April 1st to March 31st. Encloses calculations of how much Beaton has earned and informs him that he need not pay much income tax. Tells him to include entertaining expenses. Informs Beaton that he seems in need of a rest, and tells him to give up photography and spend three weeks in the Italian lakes "with someone with whom you are not in love". Will send 12 films, hoping they are for Beaton's own use or else Leng shall be "imprisoned".

Has just read Beaton's RAF book. Admires the book and discusses the difficulties Beaton must have faced. The writing and photographs are beautiful. Believes that the 'Bomber' chapter is the best. Discusses Chamberlain. Asks Beaton to attend an 'Ordinary' on 28 January 1943. Has engaged to go and wishes Beaton to go to 'make things easy'.

Was pleased to receive Beaton's cable. Is glad that Beaton thinks of her even when London is gay. New York is 'dead' at the moment. Has been to 'Hot Feet' and it was amusing and risque. Is going out with Charles Cavendish tomorrow. Discusses Charlie James. Asks if there is anything Beaton needs doing for him in New York.

Has already given Hal Burton £50 on account as he needs some money to go on with. Looks forward to receiving the Dorothy Dickson pictures and will have them framed immediately. Will definitely not open the play until about the first week in May.
