TLS to Lyn Newman

Apologises for not replying sooner to Lyn's apprehensive letter about her work on Alison Cairns, with the news that she has found the letters from Alison and greatly enjoyed reading 'Field with Geese'. Recounts all the reasons for the delay: illness, builders and decorators, emotional unpreparedness for reading Alison's letters through, her work for the Woman's International League for Peace and Freedom, and a mad neighbour. Sympathises with Lyn about Max Newman's 'medieval attitude towards a gifted wife'. Encloses some of Alison's letters. Recalls aiding Marthe Spender (wife of Hugh Spender) interned at Vittel. Discusses photographs of Alison and refers to Witold Langrod.

ALS to Lyn Newman

Believes that her brother Maurice destroyed her affairs along with his own when he vacated his flat, and with them her letters from Alison Cairns. Hopes that Lyn will find good material for her book elsewhere. Reports that she feels Alison close by her less often than she did in the first months after Alison's death. Feels that getting to know Lyn is a legacy that Alison left her, and marvels at the fullness of Lyn's life at Cross Farm. Looks forward to reading 'Field with Geese'. Offers a toasting fork for William. Asks for Elsa's address.
