Declines offer of Plumian Chair of astronomy but is flattered by sentiments expressed. Herschel states that he is not sure whether he wants to concentrate solely on astronomy after he has completed his father's work on nebulae. He feels he is better as a private amateur than as a professor and also wishes to pursue other lines of work

Gives thanks for the attention paid by AJC to Brand's 'dear Boy' whilst a student at St John's. Is thankful that the boy went to St John's rather than Jesus which is 'an hotbed made not of the purest manure'. Gives an account of his summer residence including a description of the library of the 'late Mr Pitt' and the Mausoleum of the Pelhams, 'one of the finest things I ever saw'. Gives news of acquaintances and discusses an enquiry itno the conduct of the gaoler and magistrates which was provoked by an ill judged petition to the House of Commons.

Gives an account of a recent trip to St Asaph in the Vale of Clwydd, including descriptions of Bolton, Liverpool and the modern gothic architecture of Lord Grosvenor's mansion. Also describes Welsh scenery. Gives news of mutual acquaintances.

Gives thanks for recent letter and apologises for not writing sooner. Mentions friends from Hadstock who have been staying and a friend at Ripon who is in a 'strange situation' regarding a curacy. Discusses the intricacies of the selection procedure for the curacy and also the involvement of their friend with a young widow with an income of £1000 per annum. Sends an invitation to visit.

Has been ill but has now recovered and will visit Bath in 2 or 3 months. Discusses a Rector of Wheathampstead, his marriage and makes cryptic reference to an 'Enigma'. Mentions the College examination results of his nephew. Gives news of events at Ripon, which include a death, and is derogatory about the way the Parish is run. Notes the prospect of perpetual peace in Europe and also believes that an 'eternal millenium' will soon be established.
