Glass plate negatives

Near-complete collection of Samuel Butler's glass plate negatives, corresponding to the collection of photographic prints (mostly in albums) also held by the Library. The plates have been rehoused in conservation-grade boxes and envelopes, retaining their original arrangement; the original packaging, consisting of 'Ilford Dry Plate' cardboard boxes and paper envelopes labelled by Samuel Butler and Alfred Cathie, are also in the collection. The collection is fully catalogued on an internal database and the majority of the plates have recently undergone digitization. Please contact the Library for more information.

'G.A. Paley'

Print of an engraving, published 29 November 1869, after a portrait of George Alfred Paley (1838-1866). Attached is a letter from Mr Barton Hill of Henry Graves & Co. to Henry Festing Jones, dated 18 April 1917, identifying the painter as 'Duncan' and the engraver as 'Porter'. A note by Jones at the end of the letter identifies the sitter as one of the twelve 'College friends' of Samuel Butler depicted in the collection of mounted photographs at R-Box 6/13.

'The Woodman' by Thomas Gainsborough

Print of an engraving by Peter Simon, after the painting by Thomas Gainsborough. 'Engraved from the original Picture in the Collection of the Right Hon'ble the Earl of Gainsborough. Publish'd Augt. 1. 1791 by John & Josiah Boydell, Cheapside, & at the Shakspeare Gallery Pall Mall London.'

'[Funeral of] Tom Moody'

Mounted coloured lithograph by H. Heath, after the painting by James Pollard. [Samuel Butler's own version of the image appears in chapter XIII of 'Alps and Sanctuaries'.]
