Letter from Alice Collard

Manuscript letter, addressed to 'Madam' (most likely Beaton's mother) from Alice Collard ('Ninnie'), who was nanny to Beaton and his sisters. Collard writes that she was very glad to hear that Madam is feeling better and will be pleased to visit Miss Baba will she is away. Collard hopes that Mr Beaton and Cecil are recovering from the terrible shock. Asks that Baba let her know when she will be at home, in case Collard visits and she is not at home. This letter is dated shortly after Beaton's brother, Reggie, was killed by a London Underground train in October 1933.

Letter to Irene Castle Enzinger

Typescript letter from Beaton's secretary, with a request that Castle read the enclosed manuscript and reply to Beaton with any comments or criticisms. As Beaton leaves for England on the 25th February, it is hoped that she will return the manuscript to him before then, if convenient.

Letter to Truman Capote from Enid Bagnold

Typescript letter with autograph signature, in which Bagnold writes that she has recently finished reading the script for the play adaptation of Capote's 'The Grass Harp' (which premiered on Broadway in 1952, with costumes designed by Beaton). She writes to congratulate Capote for having written such a beautiful play and to express her regrets in not having seen it performed on stage.

Gift-tag to Beaton

Manuscript gift-tag signed to Beaton from Christabal, Anna, Sachie, Rex and Willie. Additional note reads: "please note smell of myrtle".

Letter to Beaton

Manuscript signed letter, in which the author writes that s/he cannot yet believe that Beaton has gone. It was dreadful being torn from him on the docks and s/he cannot say how dull New York seems now that he isn't here. Apologises for the incoherency of what s/he writes, but s/he is suffering from a cold. Hopes to come over at the end of June.

Letters between Beaton and the American Anti-Defamation League

Typescript correspondence between Beaton's secretary (most likely Jim Benton) and Benjamin Epstein, National Director of the American Anti-Defamation League. Concerns an item printed in Ed Sullivan's column in the 'New York Daily News', in which Sullivan states that the Anti-Defamation League has still not cleared Beaton after the publication of a drawing several years previously. Epstein writes that the League does not presume to 'clear' or 'not clear' Beaton. To their knowledge, Beaton has done nothing anti-Semitic since that drawing was published.

Diana Vreeland on 'Saratoga'

Typescript notes and comments on the costumes for 'Saratoga' (1959), for which Beaton won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design and was nominated for Best Scenic Design. Concludes that what Beaton has done is remarkable.

Vreeland, Diana (1903-1989) fashion editor and consultant

Diary entry

Manuscript loose-leaf diary entry in Beaton's hand. Writes that he embarked for the country with joy and happiness. It was a relief to leave behind the complications of the city and the exhaustion that comes from too many people and too many parties. London has been very hot over the past week and on top of everything else, there has been some personal conflict to contend with as well. Recounts a difficult conversation with Peter Watson (1908-1956) and discusses his unrequited love and admiration for him.
