Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Reply to J.C.A.'s of 29th. Comments on article in Mechanics Mag. Dec. 1846. Advises to wait for new observation of New Planet (Neptune) to measure its distance from sun, not to calculate. Thanks for further figures of position of planet. Does not favour Hansen's methods of calculation, nor LeVerrier's use of single observations. On the Lunar & planetary reductions calculated from Camb. Observatory

(See G.B.A. to J.C.A. 27 Mar.1851 for table of Saturn dated 1 Feb.1847).

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Proceedings of previous day's meeting of R.A.S. Airy's objections to lack of accurate orbit [of Neptune]. Means of calculating that orbit. On the nature of scientific discovery. Regrets that JCA does not have means to exclude LeVerrier from a share in the credit of discovery of Neptune.

Sheepshanks, Richard (1794-1855) astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Quotes extract from letter received from LeVerrier on previous observations of the planet.

JCA to write to Stratford on the name Uranus.

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Autograph letter signed to U.J.J. Le Verrier

In French. Enclosed with JRH to JCA 9/25/1. Determination of the orbit of the Satellites of Neptune. See also 13/43/1, Sheepshanks to JCA. Extract apparantly sent to JCA from LeVerrier via Lassell, Sheepshanks and Hind.

Struve, Otto Wilhelm (1819-1905) astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Ephemeris of Neptune has been distributed. RAS medals. Has sent via Hind a copy of a letter from Struve to LeVerrier, forwarded via Lassell, to appear in the Comptes Rendus. Further work on Neptune: satellites. RAS to elect a number of foreign Associates: encloses list and asks for further suggestions.
