Discusses his efforts in recent examinations in Chemistry and Physics and details his future exam timetable. Discusses the arrival of some pictures and the decoration and furnishing of his rooms. Has enquired about an overcoat but believes it to be too expensive as he has already spent 'a good deal' at the tailors. Discusses visits to friends where he had to say grace, the 'grub' was 'remarkably good' and he could not find any fault with the champagne. Discusses a visit from a friend, his return to Ipswich, and asks for some money as he is running out. Gives lengthy and detailed instructions for giving Aunt Elizabeth a 'shock' using his magneto.

Has been playing cricket against Caius for the last three days. Proudly notes that John's won the match and he scored 110 not out. Has had a 'capital' pair of cricket shoes made, expensive but more longer lasting than canvas ones. Tomorrow they play against the College servants which includes a dinner in the pavilion which 'from all accounts will be rather a joke'. Is beginning 'sound' experiments at Cavendish laboratories. Also notes he requires a good supply of frogs as he has a good deal of dissecting to do.

Has been to see the scratch eights on the river and describes the sinking of two of the crews. Also notes a 'bump' supper where 'a lot of fellows got tight'. Mentions the result of an election in Brighton and the fashion of men 'wearing whites to the races'. Also notes he has dissected a worm for his biology course and asks for his paintbox to complete his illustrations. Discusses at length fellow students and scholarships to Cambridge University in indignant tones. Notes the behaviour prevalent on Sundays, hearing dance music and being told of card games being played 'and all this from clergymen's sons'.

Has been out running with the Hare and Hounds Club for a seven mile run, has been to a debate on a motion against the government which the Liberals won and is going to have to buy some expensive books.
