Part of Papers of John Anthony Crook
Describes his voyage from Southampton to Cape Town via the Bay of Biscay and Madeira. Refers to Jimmy, Ted and Phil. Mentions that they sleep on the deck as most of the troops are quartered in the Tween Decks making that an unpleasant place to sleep. Details the pastimes on board including reading, playing cards, boxing competitions and Welsh singing. Mentions that the men are orderly because alcohol is expensive. Asks whether Arthur has been accepted for service in Natal. Thanks his Grandfather for a letter. Refers to Mrs Hardiman or Hardeman.
