'Sanctuary di San Michele'

Two pen and ink drawings (or prints after pen drawings), mounted together and framed (32.5 x 23.5 cm), for 'Alps and Sanctuaries'. The first, 'Steps Leading to the Church, No. 1' (1882, p.106), is modified by hand with ink and whitener. The second, 'Main Entrance to the Sanctuary' (1882, p.104), is dated July 1880. Both are early versions of the drawings, before the addition of figures by Charles Gogin.

Pen and ink sketch on paper, mounted (24 x 35.5 cm), inscribed by Samuel Butler: 'Trapani from Mt. Eryx. showing Marettimo (all highest up in the sea) Od. ix 25. The Isola Grande (Dulichium) coud not be got into the picture.' Reproduced in 'The Authoress of the Odyssey' (1897, p.178). [No. 68 in Henry Festing Jones's 1921 catalogue.]

'Calatafimi', by Samuel Butler

Pencil sketch on paper (28.5 x 19.5 cm), inscribed by Samuel Butler: 'Calatafimi Sund. May 13. 1900 - 2 hrs Eleven a.m. is the best light.' [No. 70 in Henry Festing Jones's 1921 catalogue: 'I added "S. Butler." He could not continue because there came on a terrific scirocco which lasted two or three days.']
