"Cecil Beaton 1904-1980: A Memorial and Retrospective Exhibition". Proposed by the Barbican Art Gallery for 1985/6.

Typescript proposal for a retrospective exhibition of Beaton's work, to be managed by the Barbican Art Gallery, London, from December 1985. After its London showing, the exhibition will be transferred immediately to New York, where it will be displayed at the International Centre for Photography (ICP). It is intended that the exhibition should display roughly 150 of Beaton's most significant photographs, drawn from his entire career. The curators will be David Mellor and Terence Pepper. Creator: the Barbican Art Gallery.

Includes articles, sketches, correspondence and reviews, notably a collection of letters relating to an exhibition of Beaton's work at the National Portrait Gallery."Beaton Portraits: 1928 - 1968" was organised by the Gallery's then Director, Sir Roy Strong, in 1968. A more recent exhibition of Beaton's work was held at the National Portrait Gallery in 2004. In addition, the file includes correspondence relating to the musical fantasy film, 'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever', released in June 1970. Adapted from Alan Lerner's book for the original stage production (1965), the screenplay for "On a Clear Day" was written by Lerner, with costumes designed by Beaton. It was directed by Vincente Minnelli and starred Barbara Streisand as Daisy Gamble. The producer was Howard W. Koch.
