Discusses the play. Painted the scenery on the downs while an air battle went on overhead. Complains of the heat of the new house. Sends love from Laurian.

Is having a hard time with the new play. Feels that there are some good characters but that the action is difficult. Has had an amusing letter from Diana in Malacca. Beaton ought to see Joad. Would like to do a broadcast about her experiences.

Discusses photographs taken by Beaton. Received the photographs in the morning while wearing no glasses. After looking at the photographs of herself, she felt she looked bald. Plankie did not like them. Inspected them again with glasses on and found them better and that she at least looked intelligent. Tells Beaton she has always suffered from 'being fat and looking healthy and straight off the farm'. Saw Diana, Desmond, Oggie and Maud Russell and had a lovely evening. Diana did not like the photographs. Laurian likes them, but not for publication. Is having lunch with Korda (Sir Alexander?) on Wednesday. Discusses 'Lottie' play. Has had no letter from Binkie (Hugh Beaumont). Asks Beaton to visit.

Apologises for not replying to Beaton, but has been struggling to write. Would like to visit Beaton next summer. Asks about Beaton's play. Suggests he write a play about 'the rise of a young man'. Discusses the idea. Had lunch with Oggie and Diana (Cooper) yesterday. Is going to Chantilly at the end of October for a few days. Is going to South Africa on 6 January until April. Discusses the play "Harvey".

Discusses Irene. Feels that the set suffered because Beaton was not properly treated. Refers to Beaton's letter of 22 February. Binkie did not want to have to pay Beaton's high fee. John (Sir John Gielgud) saw pictures of the set and did not want it. Discusses her weakness. Thought that Beaton knew about the difficulties before he left for America. Wonders why Beaton did not answer her letter of welcome. Expresses sorrow at everything that has happened.

Does not know why Beaton did not open her letter of welcome. Beaton has many friends and can afford to lose one. Does not want to lose Beaton as her friend as she has very few.
