MacDonagh festschrift

Material relating to a talk 'The twentieth century revolution in government : the case of the British Treasury' given by PFC at the Oliver MacDonagh conference in September 1989, which was later published as a chapter in a Festschrift. Includes a small amount of correspondence, manuscript notes, three printed versions of the talk, labelled 'Dublin', 'Canberra', and 'Corr. disk Elgar 30 xii 96'. Some printed figures and tables produced by Roger Middleton, Department of Economic History, University of Bristol, are also present.

SDP paper

Papers relating to PFC's paper at the Conference of British Studies session of the American Historical Association in December 1982 in Washington. Includes correspondence relating to the trip, and typescript drafts of the paper 'Breaking the Mould: the Social Democratic Alliance'.

Cambridge History Society

Papers relating to talks given to the Cambridge History Society on 26 January 1982 and the Huntingdonshire Branch of the Historical Association on 15 October 1982, on 'The impact of the First World War on the course of party politics'. Correspondence, manuscript notes, and drafts of talk.

Social democrats and class

Manuscript and typescript drafts of a paper 'The social democratic theory of the class struggle', the title of which was agreed with the editor in June 1979, before the foundation of the SDP. A first draft of the paper was given to the Open University History Seminar in London on 1 February 1980. A version was written in September 1980, and revised in April 1981 following helpful criticism from John Thompson, Stefan Collini and Jay Winter. Correspondence with Stefan Collini and Lawrence Goldman is included.

Imperialism papers

Correspondence from Royal Holloway regarding a talk 'The theory and practice of imperialism'; from the University of Southampton regarding 'The economic interpretation of imperialism' delivered to the Historical Association local branch on 17 January 1980; and Sussex University History Society, also 'The economic interpretation of imperialism' delivered 23 February 1981. Also includes manuscript notes and text of the talk.

Political novel

Correspondence inviting PFC to talk to Pembroke College History Society on 'Socialism in the late Victorian & Edwardian novel', photocopies of articles relating to the topic, notes, and manuscript draft of paper, retitled 'The political novel'. Also a letter of November 1985, and typescript programme for the Historical Association (Huntingdonshire Branch) which included a talk by PFC 'Socialism in the late Victorian novel'.

British progressives and the USA

Notes for and manuscript of 'The British progressives and America', a lecture delivered at Harvard in April 1979. Correspondence with various people, including Donald Fleming, regarding the arrangements for the visit to Harvard. Also correspondence with Douglas Nachod, dating from 1974 to 1979, including discussion of a possible lecture by PFC at Cortland while he was in America. Also included is a draft of letter from PFC to Donald Fleming in 1983 regarding a possible visit.

Liberals, Labour and the franchise

1971 correspondence between PFC and the University of London Press regarding a proposed publication about the Liberal Party, which did not in the event go ahead. Pencil draft of a paper 'Liberalism in 1914: a balance sheet', which was delivered on 11 May 1972l. Various handwritten and typescript notes on the subject, together with photocopies of articles consulted. Correspondence between PFC and Ross McKibbin regarding an article and PFC's response to it. Copies of successive drafts (pencil, ink, and typescript) of article 'Liberals, Labour and the franchise : a rejoinder', plus an offprint of the published article.
